Bambaragala Temple & Pettigala Hike

Bambaragala Rajamaha Viharaya is a 2,000-year-old cave temple with Brahmi rock inscriptions dating to the 2nd–3rd century BCE, revealing that these caves were gifted to Buddhist monks by royalty. Inside, vivid Kandyan-era murals depict Jataka stories and the 24 Buddhas, commissioned by King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe in the 18th century. The temple also served as a hiding place for Sri Lanka's Sacred Tooth Relic before its permanent enshrinement in Kandy.
From the temple steps, the Pettigala hike winds through thick forest and rocky terrain to a summit at 760 metres, rewarding with an almost 360-degree panorama over the Victoria Reservoir, the Knuckles Mountain Range, and the Central Highlands, rated by many as one of the finest views in Sri Lanka.
