Victoria Reservoir & Dam

Victoria Dam is the tallest dam in Sri Lanka, rising 122 metres above the Mahaweli River and stretching 520 metres across a dramatic highland valley. It is home to the country's largest hydroelectric power station, generating 210 MW of electricity, or roughly 6% of Sri Lanka's national power supply. Construction began in 1978 and the dam was ceremonially inaugurated in April 1985 by then-President J.R. Jayewardene and British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, a fitting tribute to a project entirely funded and designed by the United Kingdom. During construction, Queen Elizabeth II herself visited the site in 1981.

Behind the dam lies the vast Victoria Reservoir, covering 22.7 square kilometres of serene highland water. Formed when the valley was flooded in 1985, the reservoir permanently submerged the old town of Teldeniya, requiring the resettlement of approximately 30,000 people. During dry season, the ghostly ruins of the old road bridge can sometimes be glimpsed beneath the surface. The reservoir lies 30 minutes from Hantana House.
