Watawala: The Place

Watawala sits in the mid-country tea belt of Sri Lanka's Central Province, in a landscape that has been shaped by the tea industry for over 150 years. The area is characterised by rolling hills terraced with tea, punctuated by the chimneys of working factories and the ordered rows of workers' lines that follow the contours of the land. It is agricultural and beautiful in equal measure — the kind of place that reminds you that landscape is never just scenery but always the product of labour and history.

The bungalow itself was built in the colonial era as a superintendent's residence — a property of some standing, positioned with the sweeping views and generous proportions that reflected the importance of its original occupants in the estate hierarchy.
