Chalets at Surf Club Midigama: A New Boutique Stay on Sri Lanka's South Coast

There's a new address on Midigama Beach, and it's one worth knowing. Chalets at Surf Club Midigama is the boutique hotel at the heart of Surf Club Midigama, set on 120 metres of fine, pale-gold sand between Weligama and Ahangama - with the legendary Lazy Left breaking directly out front.

A Sea Side Way of Life

Surf Club Midigama was built around a simple idea: a sea side way of life. The Club House sits at one end of the property, with five pastel-coloured, two-storey chalets running along the beachfront from there. Four more chalets are due to open in November 2026, bringing the total to nineteen rooms.

The design leans into its setting rather than away from it. The Club House combines pink cut-cement walls, distressed timber columns, glass and rattan ceilings, and planting and artwork drawn from daily life in Midigama - architecture by A Design Studio, with concept and product design by Cantaloupe & Co. It's built for long, easy days: tables in the shade, bar seating, day beds, and the sand just steps away.

Rooms Built for the Coast

Inside the Chalets, the palette is warm and unfussy: teak floors, solid timber furniture, woven pieces, cream tile, white linen and brass fittings. Every room faces the sea and comes with a king-size bed dressed in 400 thread-count linen.

Guests can choose between three categories:

• Deluxe Chalet - 30 sq m, ground floor, with a private sit-out and direct beach access.

• Premier Chalet - the same 30 sq m footprint, one floor up, with a private balcony and elevated ocean views.

• Club Premier - the largest room, 35 sq m inside the Club House itself, with pool and ocean views, a private balcony and sit-out, and a two-seater sofa bed for a third guest.

Every room includes air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, a minibar, a personal safe, twin washbasins, rain and hand showers, bathrobes and amenities made with natural local fruit extracts. The Club Premier bathroom goes a step further, finished in handmade Moroccan zellige tiles, each one slightly different in colour and glaze.

Food, Drink and the Club House

The Club House is open from morning until late, and the food moves with the day: an all-day breakfast menu, the Beach Club menu, and a more elevated Club menu from lunch onward. The kitchen calls its cooking Seaside Cuisine — built predominantly around Sri Lankan seafood and coastal ingredients: coconut, local citrus, green chilli, tropical fruit and island spices. Expect ceviche and sashimi, green chilli prawns, grilled octopus, yellowfin tuna and crab and clam pasta, alongside larger plates made for sharing.

At the bar, it's good coffee, cold beers, a considered wine list, and a cocktail programme built on seasonal local fruit and time-honoured technique.

Pool, Beach and Lazy Left

The Club House pool is lined in pearl-white hexagonal tiles, giving the water its signature cobalt-blue colour, and runs 61 feet long, 14 feet wide and 4 feet deep. From there, it's a short walk to the beach — accessible directly from both the Chalets and the Club House, with a natural reef that makes for excellent swimming through the season and a rock pool that holds up year-round.

And then there's the wave. Lazy Left is one of Sri Lanka's best-known breaks, and it peels directly in front of the property — which is precisely why surfers have been coming to Midigama for years. An exciting partnership with one of the world's best-known surf aggregators will be announced shortly, adding a new layer to the surf experience at Surf Club.

Music, Community and the Rhythm of the Day

Music runs from day into night, shaped for the pool, the beach, sunset and the hours after. Regular programming brings in DJs and live musicians alongside food and drink gatherings and art-led events. The Club House welcomes Chalet guests, Surf Club members and day visitors alike, so the property has a social pulse to it — while the Chalets themselves stay private and quiet, right on the beach.

Getting There

Surf Club Midigama sits on the south coast between Weligama and Ahangama, with Colombo, Galle and Bandaranaike International Airport all reachable via the Southern Expressway. Private airport transfers can be arranged on request.
