A Property With History

Built during the British colonial era, Summerhill was originally a planter's bungalow — one of the residences constructed for the tea and rubber estate managers who shaped Nuwara Eliya's character and economy. The architecture is classically colonial: high ceilings, wide verandahs, deep-set windows designed to manage the mountain light, and a relationship with the surrounding garden and landscape that places the outside world firmly at the centre of daily life.

The bungalow takes its name from its position and aspect — a south-facing elevation that catches the long afternoon sun across the valley below. In its original incarnation it would have been a place of quiet retreat for those who managed the demanding business of the estates; today, it offers the same quality of retreat to guests who arrive with no agenda other than to slow down.

Getting There

Nuwara Eliya is approximately 180km from Colombo and is served by one of Asia's great train journeys — the Kandy to Ella route, which passes through the heart of the tea country in conditions of unhurried, unrepeatable beauty. By road from Colombo, the journey takes approximately four to five hours, rising through the hill towns of Kandy and Hatton before arriving at altitude.
